Community Poem

When We Were Young

Simple minded and naive,
Unaware of the world around us,
This was life when we were young,
This is maturity when it found us.

There were never complications,
Or life defining moments.
But now it's a walk that makes us stumble,
A never ending path that we are roaming.

Back then we had it all,
We were the bosses of the town;
In charge of the neighborhood,
the one's to wear the crowns.

Our yards would smell of burgers
from the barbecue's in the summer,
Everyone knew everyone,
but no one is getting any younger.

Childrens laughter and dogs barking
was the theme song of our lives,
Riding our bikes up and down the streets,
we never knew what it meant to "hide."

But the turning point has come
and change is inevitable
It robs us of the past
and makes us all a criminal.

So one of us moves away,
and it's sad to see them go,
But pretty soon this city is empty
and now I'm here all alone.

Flashbacks of the past,
Crash into me with disdain,
Like the ocean waves crash into land;
It hits me with great pain.

But it's best to just move forward
because our past has just been hung,
life is just a continuous movement,
and we could never stay so young.

Your poem was very well written and thought out. I enjoyed it very much. The organization of each stanza was well placed also. It is easy to tell that you have a lot of experience in writing poems.

I think your poem was really good. The style was easy to read and it flowed very well. I like the language that you used. You probably picked your words very carefully so that reader understand exactly what your trying to so. "Like the ocean waves crash into land" was a great line.
